Why did I start this company? [1:20]
What I’ve seen in the past year in this industry is that people are spending 70 Billion dollars a year on things that they don't actually own which are ultimately controlled by other people. Usually these people are Apple and Google, huge monopolistic entities that take 30% of all revenue in the games industry for themselves for providing “kind of” a service. That is 21 billion dollars a year flowing into their hands. What creative expression or result are we seeing as a result of that? We’re not seeing them make games or apps, we’re just seeing them take the money. Another thing I found that was really affecting me personally was that I was hearing the experience of that from people around the world and the struggle that a lot of the were experiencing and juxtaposing that with here in the United States, with the kids that I know, who are spending about a dollar a day on games and sometimes even hundreds a day. There are other kids around the world who might even be working in sweatshops around the world for a dollar a day so I thought to myself, If we are able to decentralize the money that's flowing into the coffers of Apple and Google then that would amount to a massive amount of money going into the hands directly of the people who need it the most.
The beauty of blockchain then really started to shine through for me and how we could potentially be making this a seamless experience for people; A kid or an adult in the United States could buy something directly from somebody in a place like Cambodia and the individual from Cambodia could directly benefit from something like that. This would flow directly into our mission.
What is the mission of Gala Games? [3:39]
Our mission is that we want to enable freedom and prosperity through play. What is actually more free than owning the things that you buy?
Imagine if you wanted to buy your son, or daughter, or your niece and your nephew, or your friend’s kid a toy, you go to the toy store and before you can enter the toy store, you have to sign a terms and services agreement that said whenever they felt like it, they can come to your house and take the toy back if you share it with other people. No one would ever agree to that. You would never go to that toy store and buy toys from them. The first time you share your toy, the toy store showed up at your house, forcibly walked in, and reclaimed the toy that you spent really good money on. If this happened, there would be a massive uprising and people would never shop at that company ever again.
That's what we've been living with for the last 10 years or so. These huge companies could take our “toys” whenever they feel like it, for whatever reason they wanted. The beautiful thing about the blockchain is that we could really begin to correct that imbalance.
I think in about 3-5 years, nobody is going to be playing video games that are not actually on the blockchain. Why would you spend that kind of money on games that you don’t actually own? That is truly what we are looking to do. The other part is that there is this huge secondary market in the video game industry, something along the lines of 50 billion dollars a year is spent buying and selling game assets and it's all in this “gray market” kind of experience where you’re very likely to purchase something from a hacker then you are from a real game player and yet, people still do it. The blockchain comes in here to make this a trust list experience.
What we’re hoping we can do here at Gala is create an ecosystem that will allow people all over the world to experience the prosperity the game industry is experiencing. The games industry is looking at about 150 billion dollars a year if you add in all the secondary market stuff. Why not share this with people and create more opportunities for others?
What does this mean? [6:08]
This is the very beginning of our project but we already have people that told us directly that they’ve been able to buy their very first home in the country that they live in by playing Town Star. I think this is an absolutely epic expression of our mission.
“People are able to supplement their income through gaming.”
So, what are we REALLY doing here? [6:35]
Besides supporting and curating the Gala Ecosystem, making our own games, and publishing the games of others, we’re really about helping others and taking a very personal interest in what's going on in our community. That's one of the reasons why we’re playing Dungeons and Dragons with the community yesterday and also a lot of us in the Discord community communicate directly with the people in the Ecosystem. You’ll find me there a lot; hopefully, I’m as helpful as I think I am in there, or I try to be anyway.
A very important piece of information and this gets asked fairly regularly; people often say they’re “investing” in Gala... [7:22]
This is NOT an investment. We don’t think of it as an investment, we don’t think of it as anything to do with “ROI” or anything like that. This is not a project for crypto speculators. This is a place where if you want to come and participate in a gaming ecosystem and play amazing games, be a part of this decentralized game project and world, it's who we want.
If you’re here for an investment, take advantage of our refund and go find something that will be more to your taste because we’re always going to choose what’s best for the games and our gamers over any other interest. This is important for everyone to realize.
People say “How can that possibly be? Somebody spent $800,000 on an NFT or they spent $6,000 on a Node License?” [8:29]
What a lot of people need to understand about the game industry is that in order for them to make 70 billion dollars a year (in the mobile section), you need people to spend incredible amounts of money; and that's what they do, people are spending regularly millions of dollars a month on their own game experience. The insanity of what it used to be is that they would spend that money on a game experience that they didn’t ever actually own or control.
It's not at all surprising to me personally that given what I’ve been living in for the last 20 years that someone would spend that kind of money or even a lot more. We just don’t know what is going to happen as I’ve personally seen it. People are willing to spend money on their game experiences and that's what we’re really about; making games.
So, how are we doing? [9:41]
We’re actually doing really really well. I’m pretty excited. As you can see on our map, we have players across the globe. We have an incredibly diverse amount of people who are part of our ecosystem. We’re growing every single month and making more and more money every single month. The number of Unique users who are coming and visiting us is absolutely astonishing given where we are in this project. I couldn’t be more excited about what we’ve been building, the team is absolutely amazing. Fun note; if you’re one of our operators on a node, you’ll notice that sometimes there are more than 5,000 active nodes online. This means that there are so many servers operating across the globe. There will be more exciting features of the nodes to come.
We have a vision of the future where our entire ecosystem will be operating off of these nodes. It is going to be amazing and I’m really excited about that.
Additions to Gala Games Portfolio [11:04]
Now I know that a lot of you are hoping that we would have a big reveal of new games but we’re pretty focused on Mirandus right now and you’re going to see why that has been such an important focus for us here.
We do have other games in development… In fact, we have SEVEN more games in development. We’re working with some 3rd party studios with the new game experiences currently in creation; some very large, very well-known AAA game studios. Once we’re cleared and able to share some images with you all, we will be doing so.
You can get a sense here of the types of games we’re looking at building.
Multiple 4x Games
First Person Shooter
We really think that the entire games industry can fit inside the blockchain so we’re gonna make tons of different types of games.
Probably the first game you’re going to see is...[12:13]
A tower defense. It’s a personal favorite of mine. I enjoy strategy games, I like tower defense, and I think it really works well with the whole idea of NFTs, land, upgrades, and different things like that. I think the fun thing about this game is that it is going to be based on the Binance smart chain.
[12:35] We announced a little while ago that we were going to be working with Binance and a lot of our users have been experiencing issues with Ethereum… and rightfully so, it's been kind of a pain in the ass and I’m sorry about that. Hopefully, working with Binance will change a lot of that for you guys.
[12:54]We also have been talking to Flare and Matic but this first one is going to be focused on Binance unless something changes...you never know, things can shift around.
[13:06] We hope to have our first token drops coming sometime around the end of March. If it is not the end of March, it’ll probably be in April, but it is coming soon.
Gala Game Fund [13:19]
As a lot of you know, there’s a big chunk of GALA that has been set aside for ecosystem development and we are going to be moving 2 billion GALA into a wallet that is designated for the Gala Game Fund. The cool thing about this is that if you’re a game developer, go check out gala.fund and submit a proposal to us. We’re going to have the team curate, take a look at the proposals; If you’re a node owner, you’re going to get to vote on whether or not they receive a grant for development and integration into Gala. As we develop the ecosystem more, the nodes are going to be playing a more and more integral role in the governance of what we’re doing.
First submissions to the fund will be hackathon entries! These will also be judged for a development award from the Gala Games team, separate from any potential integration discussions.
Both the Gala Game Fund and the Hackathon are going to work really well together. I’m hopeful that we are going to be able to see a lot of creativity from the ecosystem. I know a lot of users in Discord talk about their own personal projects and I hope they submit their ideas.
**Go to the gala.fund and submit your game development proposal. All entries for the next week will count as Hackathon entries. Up to three of these will receive a $10,000 development grant from Gala Games and could possibly receive personal investment from the Gala Games Team.
One of the reasons why we have this isn't just to create more games for the Gala Ecosystem, what I’ve witnessed over the years, in order to get a game built, you have to really focus on game experiences that you’re absolutely certain are going to make an incredible amount of money. As a result of that, we haven’t really seen as much creativity as I think is actually present in the minds of the game developers. I’m hopeful that we can provide a place for really interesting creative expression in the games industry.
Even if you think that your idea is a little wacky, please send it in. We still want to take a look at it. We’re looking to have as much creative flow as we possibly can. I think the fund is going to be doing a lot of good things, I hope we can really work and partner with you guys on building some amazing experiences.
